Irregular verbs in Presente II

Salgo con amigos cada día

Apart from the irregular verbs with vowel modifications (e-ie, o-ue, e-i), there are verbs with consonant modifications. They are only two groups.

-g before the ending

There is quite a limited list of verbs where in the first person (yo) the g letter appears in front of the ending.

salir – to go out, leave

yo salgo

tú sales

él, ella, usted sale

nosotros salimos

vosotros salís

ellos, ellas, ustedes salen

This modification takes place in the “yo” form, only. The rest of the forms are regular.

Salgo de casa a las ocho de la mañana — I leave home at eight in the morning

¿A qué hora sales de la oficina? — What time do you leave the office?

hacer — to do, to make

yo hago

tú haces

él hace

nosotros hacemos

vosotros hacéis

ellos hacen

¿Qué haces por la tarde? – What do you do in the afternoon?

No hago nada – I do nothing

poner – to put

yo pongo

tú pones

él, ella, usted pone

nosotros ponemos

vosotros ponéis

ellos, ellas, ustedes ponen

Pongo el lápiz sobre la mesa — I put the pencil on the table

¿Qué ponen las chicas en el bolso? — What do girls put in the bag?

There are also verbs, that belong both to this group and to a group with the vocal modification.

tener — to have

yo tengo

tú tienes

él, ella, usted tiene

nosotros tenemos

vosotros tenéis

ellos, ellas, ustedes tienen

Tengo un perro — I have a dog

¿Tienes hermanos o hermanas? — Do you have brothers or sisters?

The verb tener is used to ask about the age.

¿Cuántos años tienes? – How old are you?

Tengo veintiséis años – I’m twenty six years old

Don’t say: yo soy 26

traer — to bring

El camarero trae la comida — The waiter brings the food

Traigo una noticia buena — I bring a good news

oír — to hear

yo oigo

tú oyes

él oye

nosotros oímos

¿Oyes la música? — Do you hear the music?

No, no oigo la música — No, I don’t hear the music

venir — to come

yo vengo

tú vienes

él viene

nosotros venimos

vosotros venís

ellos vienen

Normalmente Juan viene a las siete — Normally, Juan comes at seven

¿De dónde vienes? — Where do you come from? Where are you coming from?

Vengo de la casa de Fernando — I’m coming from Fernando’s home

c – zc

This is the last stem modification, that exists in Presente de Indicativo. It also takes place only in the first form (yo). The other forms are always regular.

conocer — to know, to be acquainted with somebody or something

yo conozco

tú conoces

él conoce

nosotros conocemos

vosotros conocéis

ellos conocen

Yo no conozco a tu padre — I don’t know your father

¿Conoces a Rodrigo? — Do you know Rodrigo?

This is a short list of the verbs that are conjugated just like conocer.

traducir – to translate

conducir – to drive

producir – to produce

ofrecer – to offer

Other irregular verbs

There is a couple of irregular verbs, that have their own forms, so they can’t be grouped. Ser and estar, which you learned earlier, are among them.

En verano vamos a España — In the summer we are going to Spain

¿Adónde vas? — Where are you going?

Voy a la tienda — I’m going to the shop

saber — to know (something abstract)

yo sé

tú sabes

él sabe

nosotros sabemos

vosotros sabéis

ellos saben

Saber has only one irregular form: yo sé.

Yo sé que Elena vive en Andalucía — I know, that Elena lives in Andalusia

¿Sabes que el lunes viene Pepe? — Do you know, that Pepe will come on Monday?

dar — to give

yo doy

The rest of the forms are regular.
