The Imperative is a special mood (set of forms), which allows to make direct requests and commands to make somebody to produce some actions. “Bring me, do it, get out, eat, go to sleep, don’t run, don’t come” – in this and the next lessons we are going to learn, how to say all this in Spanish.
There are two types of imperative in Spanish:
Affirmative imperative (Imperativo afirmativo): bring me, do it, get out, eat, go to sleep.
Negative imperative (Imperativo negativo): don’t run, don’t come.
Spanish has different types of forms for these two imperatives. We’ll explore them separately. The first three lessons are dedicated to the affirmative imperative only.
José, habla más alto, por favor – Jose, speak louder, please
Hijo, come la ensalada – Son, eat the salad
Señor Martínez, escuche al doctor Sánchez – Sr. Martinez, listen (usted) to the doctor
Suba usted aquí – Come up (usted) here
Miren este pedazo de hierro – Look (ustedes) at this piece of iron
Trabajad rápido – Work (vosotros) fast
Verbs in imperative should be conjugated just like in ordinary tenses, but the number of personal forms is slightly reduced. There are no forms for yo, él, ella, or ellos.
Let’s take a look at the verb conjugation in Imperativo afirmativo in all possible persons.
Verbs ending with ar, er and ir are conjugated separately.

As you can see, in English all personal imperative forms are optimized, but in Spanish they are not. You must use right endings, so that they match a person or people you are talking to.

If you compare the conjugation of the three verb groups, you’ll notice, that there is some sort of a play on endings. The a letter is changed to e, and viceversa. The 3d group of verbs has the same endings, as the 2nd group, except for vosotros.
Vosotros is by far the simplest form in Imperativo. You just grab an infinitive and replace the last r with d.
Pay special attention to what syllables should be stressed when pronouncing verbs in Imperativo.
Don’t say: prepará, trabájad, comprén, hablé, escríbamos
Say: prepara, trabajad, compren, hable, escribamos
Try not to be confused with tú, vosotros, usted and ustedes. Always keep in mind who you are talking to, whether it’s a friend or friends, a respected señor or several respected señores.
Nosotros is the most special form of all, and needs a particular explanation. This form is used as a call to action to several people, including the speaker (escribamos, hablemos). These requests and commands can be translated into English using the “let’s” verb, or, less often, the Future Simple tense.
Esperemos que sí – Let’s hope, that yes. We’ll hope so
Trabajemos más fuerte – Let’s work harder
Arreglemos la situación – Let’s fix the situation
Cantemos todos juntos – Let’s sing all together
The imperative for nosotros resembles the “Vamos a …”construction, which literally means “Let’s … “.
