There is an analogy of the Past Perfect tense in Spanish. It’s called Pluscuamperfecto. It’s used to say, that one action had been produced before another action in the past.
Ayer Juan dijo que anteayer había comprado una tele – Yesterday Juan said, that the day before yesterday he had bought a TV
Entré en el cuarto de baño y vi que el fontanero había roto el espejo – I entered the bathroom and saw, that the plumber had broken the mirror
Durante la cena los invitados dijeron que nunca habían probado un plato tan rico – During the dinner the guests said, that they had never tried such a delicious dish
The forms of Pluscuamperfecto are quite simple. They are built using the haber + participio construction, where the verb haber takes forms of Imperfecto.

These forms resemble Pretérito Perfecto. In Pretérito Perfecto the verb haber is conjugated in Present: he, has, ha, hemos, habéis, han.
In Pluscuamperfecto haber is conjugated in Imperfecto: había, habías, había, habíamos, habíais, habían.
Pretérito Perfecto (he hecho) is used, when an action has happened before the present moment.
Marcelo ha comprado un coche – Marcelo has bought a car
Pluscuamperfecto (había hecho) is used, when an action had happened before some moment in the past.
Marcelo había comprado un coche – Marcelo had bought a car
Mi jefe dijo que no había recibido ningún correo electrónico – My boss said, that he hadn’t received any email
Ayer Miguel y Luisa me contaron cómo habían pasado sus vacaciones – Yesterday Miguel and Luisa told me, how they had spent their vacation
María supuso que nosotros habíamos estado en España – Maria supposed, that we had been to Spain

Usually, when actions are lined up in a chronological order, we use Indefinido. Then we add Pluscuamperfecto, if some action had been performed before. Pluscuamperfecto is a very conditional tense. It indicates, that the straight consequence of actions is changed.
When you need to do a whole narration with many actions, which had happened before some other actions in the past, Pluscuamperfecto is normally replaced with Indefinido. Otherwise, the sentences will look too long and overloaded.
Ayer mi compañero me contó que anteayer había visto a Gabriela. Gabriela tenía mucha prisa. Cuando la llamó por su nombre, ella se volvió sorprendida y sonrió…
