Section 18 Lesson 2

Prepositional pronouns

¿Es para mí?

Prepositional pronouns are personal pronouns used with prepositions.

They were already mentioned in one of the previous lessons about the verb gustar. Maybe, you can even remember their forms.

In this lesson we are going to look into them separately from gustar.

Prepositional pronouns always come with a preposition, be it para, de, a, por, en, etc.

para mí

para ti

para él

para ella

para usted

para nosotros

para vosotros

para ellos

para ellas

para ustedes

As you can see, almost all forms coincide with the neutral personal pronouns (él – para él, nosotros- para nosotros), except for the first two (yo – para mí, tú – para ti). That’s why prepositional pronouns are so simple.

Say them with other prepositions: a, de, en, sin.

Este regalo es para ti — This present is for you

Pienso mucho en vosotros — I think a lot about you

Él dice que no puede vivir sin mí — He says, that he can’t live without me

Yo hago todo esto por usted — I do all this for your sake

Try it yourself:

Is this letter for me?

I can’t sleep without you

There is a wardrobe behind me

There is a big cloud above us

The preposition con is a little exception. It has its own forms for yo and tú.

yo – conmigo

tú – contigo

él – con él

, etc.

Quiero estar contigo — I want to be with you

Mis hijos viven conmigo — My children live with me

José estudia con nosotros — Jose studies with us

Don’t say: Quiero estar con ti

Try it yourself:

Do you want to go to the cinema with me?

They will stay with us

I’m with you

I don’t work with them

There is also a reflexive derivative consigo – with himself / herself.

¿Por qué Miguel hace esto consigo? — Why does Miguel do it with himself?

This is a list of the most common Spanish prepositions and their basic meaning.

a – to

de – of, from, about

con – with

sin – without

para – for

por – for one’s sake, by

desde – from

hasta – till

sobre – on, about

hacia – towards

There will be lessons dedicated specifically to prepositions and their use cases. Don’t worry, if you don’t feel sure about them right now. At this point, you simply should have a good idea of what prepositional pronouns are.
