Section 8 Lesson 1

Possessive pronouns

Mi camisa es azul y tu camisa es blanca

Instead of the definite articles el and ella you can use a possessive pronoun, like my, your, his, etc.

yo — mi (my)

tú — tu (your)

él — su (his)

ella — su (her)

usted — su (your)

nosotros — nuestro (our)

vosotros — vuestro (your)

ellos — su (their)

ellas — su (their)

ustedes — su (your)

Mi casa es grande

Tu coche es nuevo

Es Marcos. Su amigo es de Italia

Es María. Su madre está en Colombia

Señor Pérez, ¿dónde está su mujer?

Nuestro país es bonito

Vuestro profesor es muy joven

Los chicos son buenos. Su padre es médico

Las chicas son malas. Su padre es un ladrón

¿Están ustedes en el trabajo? ¿Dónde está su oficina?

Nuestro and vuestro are the only pronouns that change the ending to nuestra and vuestra if the next noun is feminine.

nuestro coche – our car

nuestra casa – our house

vuestro piso – your flat

vuestra hermana – your sister

Try it yourself:

our phone

my friend

her granddad

your city (tú)

his teacher

their child

your mother (vosotros)

your wallet (usted)

Plural

Possessive pronouns are just like adjectives. They take the form of the noun they are related to. With multiple object the form of the pronouns should be plural.

yo — mis (my)

tú — tus (your)

él, ella, usted — sus (his, her, your)

nosotros — nuestros (our)

vosotros — vuestros (your)

ellos, ellas, ustedes — sus (their, their, your)

There is no difference in English, but in Spanish this difference is essential.

mi coche — mis coches

tu casa — tus casas

su padre — sus padres

nuestro jefe — nuestros jefes

nuestra profesora — nuestras profesoras

vuestro niño — vuestros niños

vuestra lengua — vuestras lenguas

su bicicleta — sus bicicletas

Don’t say: mi coches or vuestro niños

Try it yourself:

your books

our keys

our teachers

my friends

your faces (vosotros)

her hands

your words (ustedes)

Don’t confuse the personal pronouns and the possessive pronouns: yo and mi, tú and tu, vosotros and vuestro, nosotros and nuestro.
