Ser
Tú eres mi amigo
You are ready to build whole sentences using the Spanish personal pronouns from the previous lesson.
After this lesson you will be able to describe people in different persons and say phrases like these ones:
Yo soy guapa – I’m beautiful
Tú eres profesor – You are a teacher
Nosotros somos hermanos – We are brothers
All you need to know is the forms of the Spanish verb ser.
Ser is like the English “to be”. Putting a verb in different forms is called conjugation. So, let’s take a look at how the verb ser is conjugated.

Yo soy José — I am Jose
Tú eres médico — You are a doctor
Él es americano — He is American
Ella es americana — She is American
Usted es profesor — You are a teacher
Nosotros somos españoles — Мы испанцы
Vosotros sois estudiantes — You are students
Ellos son amigos — They are friends
Ellas son amigas — They are friends
Ustedes son muy amables — You are very kind

Short sentences
Spanish verbs are very independent and in many cases don’t need any pronoun.
Instead of saying Yo soy José it’s absolutely possible to say Soy José. It may seem unusual, but it’s a very common Spanish feature.
Yo soy inglés = Soy inglés
Tú eres inteligente = Eres inteligente
Nosotros somos amigos = Somos amigos
Él es argentino = Es argentino

Direct questions and answers
To build direct questions use either a direct or an inverted word order.
Tú eres español
a. ¿Tú eres español?
b. ¿Eres español tú?
c. ¿Eres tú español?
The inverted word order is when the verb ser appears at the beginning of the question. In this case, it doesn’t matter whether the pronoun comes after it or is placed at the end.

In the vast majority of situations the personal pronoun is omitted, so the word order remains the same as in the affirmative sentence.

The affirmative answers with pronouns should have a direct word order.

In the negative sentences “no” should always come before the verb ser.
