You already know how to give names to objects in many different ways. Let’s now add colors and learn how to use Spanish adjectives.
Adjective is a category of words that is needed to describe objects. They give answers to the question “What is it like?”
blanco – white
El perro es blanco – The dog is white
El teléfono es blanco – The phone is white
When you describe a specific object, you have to place the definite articles el or la before it. If you say “Un perro es blanco”, it will be translated as “A dog is white”. It can be also correct in some contexts, but now we are describing a specific dog.

Now we have used only masculine gender nouns: perro, teléfono, vaso, etc. If the gender is feminine, we must say blanca.
La taza es blanca – The cup is white
This is the most important feature of Spanish adjectives. They modify the ending according to the gender of the noun.

As you can see, Spanish adjectives change their gender according to the gender of the noun. To choose the right ending you have to keep the gender of the noun always in your mind.
There are adjectives, however, that don’t end in o.
azul – blue
verde – green
marrón – brown
These adjectives don’t change. They don’t have a feminine form.
El cielo es azul
La camisa es azul
El coche es verde
La manzana es verde
La camiseta es marrón
El armario es marrón

What is the table like?
The first one is a general question starting with Cómo.
¿Cómo es el lápiz? – What is the pencil like?
El lápiz es rojo – The pencil is red
Cómo literally means “how”. Use cómo when you want somebody to describe an object.
¿Cómo es la casa?
La casa es roja

Questions starting with cómo are very general. They don’t necessarily require a color. You can put any adjective in the response.
This one is specifically about colors. Place it instead of cómo from the previous examples.
¿De qué color es la mesa? – What color is the table?
La mesa es gris – The table is gray
¿De qué color es la chaqueta?
La chaqueta es amarilla

Let’s take a sentence with an adjective and make a direct question out of it.
La mesa es blanca
As always, to build a direct question you have two word order options – the direct word order and the inverted word order.
La mesa es blanca

b. ¿Es blanca la mesa?
In case of the direct word order, nothing changes, except for the intonation.
In the inverted word order the verb es together with the adjective are moved to the beginning of the sentence.
Both order types are very common and absolutely equal.

¿Es rojo el puente?
¿La pared es verde?
¿Es verde la pared?
