Let’s move to a more practical part. In this lesson we are going to start building simple Spanish sentences, using the words that you learned before. These words will help you describe the objects you can find around. We’ll start by describing a room and then we’ll go out and discover the whole world in Spanish.

Answering this question we give names to objects.

Esto es un lápiz – This is a pencil

Esto es una mesa – This is a table
When we give objects their names, we use the indefinite articles un and una.

These two word orders are absolutely equal. They are just two options of saying the same thing.

Pay attention to the word order. Questions can be reversed, but the answers should be direct.

Answering with No

In the negative answers the no particle is used twice. The first one means literally “No”. The second one is needed to switch the verb into the negative form. It’s like “not” in English.

In this lesson you have learned how to build very simple Spanish sentences, how to make direct questions with two word orders and how to answer them with Sí and No. These phrases are really primitive and basic, but you will be building more complex sentences, using exactly these templates.
